ABSENCES
For the safety or our students it is important for us to communicate with parents when a student is absent during school hours. Parents are asked to call the Northwood office at 488-1300 whenever their child will be absent or late to school. Please feel free to call outside of the normal business hours and leave a message for our office staff, we will return your call if more information is needed. If a student is marked absent by their teacher a robo call will be sent to those parents who have not communicated to excuse asking them to call with information. This communication is mandated by the State of Michigan.
PARENT/STUDENT HANDBOOK
The Northwood Elementary Handbook (PDF) includes a summary of basic information, FAQ's, and school policies. It is sent home with the packet at the beginning of the school year. Please spend some time reviewing the handbook with your child, so that you are familiar with our policies and procedures.
PICKING UP STUDENTS
Student safety is a top priority for us at Northwood! If you wish to pick up your children after school, please sign your child out in the office and then wait in the main lobby. Children who are picked up after school will not be allowed to leave the building until an approved adult has signed them out in the gymnasium. This will help eliminate confusion and crowded conditions in the hallways, and ensure that your child is released to a safe and approved person at the end of the day.
Students are dismissed at 3:35. Every moment that your child spends at school is crucial to his or her success and growth throughout the year, therefore, we request that parents do not pick up their students prior to 3:35 unless it is absolutely necessary. In order to keep all children safe, we also ask that parents do not allow their children access to the parking lot unattended. Thank you for your cooperation and support.
PARENT-TEACHER ORGANIZATION
Northwood Elementary is fortunate to have a very active and outstanding Parent-Teacher Organization. The Parent-Teacher Organization is an important part of our school family, raising funding for many school events and activities, and supporting our school mission. The meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month from 6:00 to 7:00 PM in our library. Childcare is provided free of charge in the gym. Please watch for information about specific dates for PTO meetings, and contact our office if you would like more information. We hope you will get involved!
NORTHWOOD BEHAVIOR PLAN
A positive and safe environment is crucial to the success of all of our students. Our teaching staff has designed a school-wide behavior plan for Northwood. Our plan incorporates positive praise and reinforcement, as well as clear and specific expectations.
We are happy to welcome you to Northwood, and look forward to a successful year of learning, growth and fun!
Sincerely,
Phyllis Mion
Principal, Northwood Elementary
